The process of motivation dates back to Sigmund Freud where he explained the workings of the piece mind in terms of what is conscious and what is not. He further theorized a structural model of the human psyche defined by three parts of the psychic apparatus: the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. The Ego, which is the executive apparatus, acts as a balancing mechanism which rejects unconscious drives from the Id. The Id therefore, is the “pleasure-seeking” principle in the unconscious mind which wants, desires, and seeks instant gratification.
Freud would say then, that an organism’s perception of an attractive stimulus is indeed unconscious, but the “wanting” for that stimulus is caused by the organism’s Id, which wants, desires, and seeks gratification. Thus, according to Freud, an organism’s ability to follow- by means of with seeking pleasure through the attractive stimulus is monitored by the Ego.
