Within abolitionism, womens rights stirred hot debate. The strongest index of womens rights was the libertarian William Lloyd Garrison, editor of the Liberator. He insisted that anti-slavery was a battle for human rights, not just male rights.
Many of the abolitionists who opposed Garrison on this agreed that women were self-owners but resisted from mixing womens rights from anti-slavery for fear that it would hurt the last mentioned cause. Theodore Weld then went on an exemplified this position.
