The Body by means of time is theme that the art students of Clancy College have been studying. It explores the way the tender form has been portrayed through the ages. The human form has been picture differently by the cultural influences of the time, the works created by the Nomads, antique Egyptians and Greeks, all reflect this.
It was believed that a large number of effeminate figures portraying features of affluence were found in the Nomadic season (from 24 000- 22 000BCE, also considered to be the Paleolithic and neolithic periods). Although these sculptures were produced over a vast geographical area, each withal portrayed a woman with large breasts and thighs, a deform stomach and usually a featureless face. A exemplar of this would include the genus Venus of Willendorf which was carved from limestone and only stands 11.5 centimeters tall (believed to be carried around in the hands of the traveling tribes). She was believed to have been the fertility goddess for the unsettled throng, consequently the sculpture having the exaggerated appearance.
Through the Venus of Willendorf having absolutely no facial features, it is symbolic of womanhood in general, and does not distract from the significance of the sculptures purpose (excessive feminine areas; emphasise fertility). This exhibits ways that were once very appealing and sought later in women, which portrays her as an image of natural femininity, and of uninhibited pistillate power. The Nomadic people turned to her for good and healthy offspring, and for becoming pregnant in general. As a result, representing how the culture of the nomadic people focused and held a great importance on the fertility of women.
