ARTICLE SUMMARY-
This article describing research conducted by Ross Levi n and Tore Nielsen contains compelling evidence and explanation of how and wherefore we have incubuss or harebrained dreaming. They purposed that normal dreaming serves as a fear-extinction function and that nightmares reflect failures in emotion commandment (Levin & adenine; Nielsen, 2009). There is a strong association among disturbed dreaming frequency and waking psychopathology (e.g. Berquier & Ashton, 1992; Blagrove, Farmer, & Williams, 2004; Hartmann, Russ, Oldfiled, sivan & cooper, 1987; Levin & Fireman, 2002; Levin & Nielsen, 2007; Nielsen, Laberge, Tremblay, Vitaro & Montplaisir, 2000) which suggests that nightmare production is related to a personality style thats influenced by emotional distress (Belicki, 1992; Blagrove et al., 2004; Levin & Fireman, 2002; Levin & Nielsen, 2007; Nielsen et al., 2000).



Stressfull animation events and exposure to trauma is said to also by relate to nightmares (e.g., Mellman, David, Kulick-Bell, Hebding, & Nolan, 1995; Woodward, Arsenault, Murray, & Bliwise, 2000). This is evidenced in a news report by Wood, Bootzin, Rosenhan, Nolen-Hoeksema, and Jourden (1992) following the 1989 San Francisco earthquake which found that people who lived in the area reported incidences of disturbed dreaming twice as high and those who lived closest were more likely to experience disturbed dreaming.
